Declaring forbankruptcy can have a negative impact on your credit score, resulting in difficulty getting loans approved or increasing credit lines. Fortunately, you are still able to salvage your credit score despite falling on hard times.
The following are helpful tips to improve your credit score post-bankruptcy:
- Understand your limits. Once you filed for bankruptcy, it's important to not fall back into old spending habits that got you in your financial mess in the first place.
- Check your credit score meticulously. Ensure that no mistakes in your credit reports are evident. Then, you must continue to take a look every six months or so. If you're on track, you'll recognize that your bankruptcy items will start to diminish. If that's not the case, follow through with any mistakes you encounter.
- If mistakes are evident, handle it in writing. When dealing with the credit company, always send your information by certified mail which details what is wrong. Include your name, address, date of birth, and social security number. Follow-through with your case until the issue is resolved.
- Pay off any remaining debts on time. In addition, pay more than the minimum amount to demonstrate to the credit company that you are being responsible. The quicker you pay off your debt, the more improved your credit score will be.
- Diligently remove any debt from your credit report. Settling a debt and removing it from your credit will result in your credit score improving.
- Apply for several secured credit cards. Secured credit cards enable those with financial issues rebuild their credit and work in a different way compared to a regular credit card. You deposit money first and then use them like debit cards. The more money you deposit, the more money will display as a “line of credit.”
- Use your secured credit cards carefully. If you are able to successfully gain a few credit cards, you must use them in order to rebuild your credit. It's wise to use them several times a month, which includes small purchases. Don't forget to pay off your balance every single month.
